About Us

Machinery & Plant Auctions was started by Simon McKay a long time local of the Manawatu area, building a well-known and recognized name in the community for friendly, client-orientated service.

Simon sold the business to Alex & Tracey Dawson in 2019 who also own Thornton Auctions in Auckland. Alex & Tracey's main focus was to ensure the well-established auction house could continue to provide a valuable service to the locals.

John Cribb came onboard shortly after, which allowed Alex & Tracey to refocus on the Auckland operation. John renamed Machinery & Plant to Thornton Auctions Manawatu, signalling the partnership that developed & is set to continue between the Feilding and Auckland branches.

John sold Thornton Auctions Manawatu to Frances & Bernard Walsh, Manawatu locals, in September 2021.

Our Location

Located in the central Manawatu with easy access to all points from Wellington to Taupo, Whanganui to Waipukurau. Our work has taken us as far as Gisborne, New Plymouth and Blenhiem. You will find us 150m from the gate of Manfeild Park Raceway, and within walking distance of the main street of Feilding. Our yard suits all vehicles with 2 access points and large turn around areas.

We do not know everything and you may have a question not listed here. Call us and discuss and other questions you have.

If you're at the depot, raise your catalogue so the auctioneer knows you are bidding. If you're online, you need to have registered for the auction & accepted the terms & conditions. Then on the catalogue page, click on the green button that lists the current bid amount (which makes a single bid), but click on the 'Place Autobid' button if you want to bid at the set increment to a specific dollar value. You can also leave an absentee bid with our staff.

Yes, this is a requirement for us and by law. We have regular buyer numbers for those people who attend our in-house auctions on a regular basis; they will use this same number each time they attend an in-house auction. Otherwise a new buyer number will be issued each time. This means that when you attend an auction at the depot, you will need to register at the office to receive a buyer number that will be valid for that one auction. If you bid online, the system will automatically issue a buyer number to you, that again, will be valid only for that one auction.

Buyers Premium is a form of guarantee that the item YOU purchase is yours and gives you clear title to that item. If there is a dispute, we will help you through it.

No we do not. We can assist with arranging a courier though, or you may wish to organise your own. Just let us know what you're planning.

A notification will be sent to you via email. You may pay in house or through internet banking. Once the items have been paid for in full they may be collected or a courier can be arranged for collection.

A general rule of thumb for auctions is Buyer Beware and there is no warranty expressed or implied unless stated otherwise. We strongly suggest buyers inspect the items they are interested in before bidding, especially if the condition of those items is not clear. We will always describe items to the best of our knowledge, also using information passed to us by the vendor, therefore, if there is a fault or damage, we will put it in the description. We are happy to work with you if you think you have not received the item that has been described.

Collection of items that have been purchased should be completed within 3 working days, and items can only be collected if the buyer invoice has been fully settled. If you need a little longer to get into the depot to collect, let us know.

We pay vendors via an online bank transfer which gives you & us very clear transparency of transaction. We pay you once we have been paid, there is a 14 working day wait period. If the items have not been paid by then the transaction is cancelled and the item(s) re-presented.
